Rigged games
There is a lot of conspiracy theories among online players that poker sites cheat their own customers. Even a lot of very good players seems to believe in this. When a very strong hand is beaten by two perfect cards or someone is winning by catching his 1-outer again you will hear the upset comments on the chat “This game is rigged” “This newer happens in a live game” “No way the cards are dealt random.”
And I must say that sometimes I feel like that too. When you are frustrated it’s nice to have someone to blame. If you play a lot of internet poker you will often see strange hands. I believe this is because you play so many more hands on the net then you do live. The speed on the net is 2-3 times as fast as a live game and many players play 2-4 tables simultaneously. This means you see ten times as many hands an hour on the net then you do live. And that’s why you see so many strange things. You see more hands and you ignore the normal ones and remember the strange. And why would the sites cheat? They invests millions in this lucrative business . Why risk their profit and their integrity by cheating their customers? I can promise you that you are doing better if you don’t believe in this kind of conspiracy theories.
Cheating and collusion
I play internet poker full time and I have never seen cheating as a big problem. It have not stopped me from making money. But cheating do exist in online poker and you should be aware of it.
Some people are afraid that hackers could break into the system and see the cards of their opponents while they are playing. Maybe this could happen even if the poker sites do everything they can to avoid it. But it would not go on for long, these sites would be out of business very fast.
Collusion between players is a more valid concern. On the higher limits players are more aware and would detect and report collusion fast. It’s in the lower limits it could be a problem. It’s easy for players to connect from two different computers and then communicate on the telephone. To knew each others cards will give them an unfair advantage. They can also betting for each other and build a big pot when one of them holding a super strong hand.
If you suspect someone to cheat you should of course report them. Poker sites have sophisticated software to detect cheating. and if they suspect someone to be a cheater they will freeze his account and ban him from playing. If you only have weak reasons to suspect someone, why not just change table?
Good players have little reasons to cheat. They win anyway so why risk to be banned and to loose their income?
The cheaters are most likely mediocre players and its not sure that the advantage the are getting from cheating are enough to make them winners.
Computer programs
Players are allowed to use some poker programs on most sites. Programs like Poker Office gives you a lot of statistics and some help to calculate the odds in realtime. But programs that plays online poker by themselves are not allowed. It probably exists programs that beats small stakes limit Hold ém. I believe it’s much more difficult to make a program that beats No-limit Hold ém. I have seen no indications on that computers are playing in the games I’m playing ( middle limits No-limit Hold ém ). But I’m a little bit worried that in a few years they will come and that could be a big problem for online poker.
