Craps is played with two dice on a special craps table. The first roll in a round is called the Come out roll. If the shooter happens to throw a total of 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12 the round ends. If any other total is rolled that number is called the point and the dice will be rolled continuously until the same point or a 7 is rolled.

There is one fundamental bet, the pass line that most players make. The pass line bet is an even money bet with a house edge of 1.4%, which is better than most other casino games, and gives the player a reasonable chance to win.

If you bet on the pass line and the come out roll comes 7 or 11, you win. This is called a “natural.” A total of 2, 3, or 12 means you loose, and this is called craps.
When another number comes (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) that number is the Point, and the dice will be rolled until the Point or a 7 is hit. Throwing a point first means you win, but throwing a 7 means you lose and it’s called a “seven out.”
If a point is rolled you also have the possibility to make another bet, usually maximum 2 times the initial pass line bet, that the point will be rolled before a 7. This bet is called The odds and is paid as follows: If the point is a 6 or 8 the odds pay 6-5, if the point is a 5 or 9 the odds pay 3-2, and if the point is a 4 or 10 the odds pay 2-1. The Odds bet is a bet with no house edge so this is a bet you normally will make.

The don't pass is the opposite of the pass line bet. With the come out roll of 2 or 3 you win, 7 or 11 you lose. A 12 is a push. On other numbers, the dice are rolled over and over until either the point or a 7 is rolled. If the 7 come before the point you win.

The Come and Don’t Come are the same bets as pass and don’t pass with the exception that you don’t have to wait for a come out roll, to make the bet. When you play craps online you are alone at the table so there is no big reason to make this bet.

There is lots of other possible bets in craps but they all have one thing in common, the house edge is very high at most of them.
You can for example bet on a 2 next roll. If it hits you are paid 30:1, but this bet have a house edge of 14%.

There is also something called “Place number bets”. You may bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 and if the number you bet on is rolled before a 7 then you win according to a payoff schedule.
A bet on 4 or 10 pays 9:5, house edge of 6.67%.
A bet on 5 or 9 pays 7:5, house edge of 4.00%.
A bet on 6 or 8 pays 7:6, house edge of only 1.52%.

The best strategy for the beginner is to play the pass line bet and if a point is rolled then make the maximum bet on the odds. If you only make this bets you will have reasonably good odds and a fair chance to win. To be a winner at craps in the long run is unfortunately impossible. But craps is an exciting and very popular game and is definitely worth a try.
