To become a winning poker player you have to read some poker literature. You can find an infinite amount of poker advice and strategy on the net. Some of it sound but also a lot of incorrect information. I think its easier to buy a few good poker books and be sure to learn correct strategy from the beginning.

The Theory of Poker, David Sklansky

I believe its the best book about poker ever written. The book deals with the general theories and concepts of poker play. Its a book for the serious student of the game.
 

No Limit Holdém: Theory and practice , David Sklansky, Ed Miller

This is one of the best no limit hold 'em book out there. As long as you have a basic understanding of the underlying concepts of poker (see: Sklansky's 'The Theory of Poker') this book will improve your no limit game. It teaches concepts above and beyond the basic "tight and aggressive" formula that most every other book advocates. If you want to consistently make money playing no limit hold 'em, reading this book is a great start.


Mastering no-limit holdém, Russel Fox & Scott T. Harker

If you’re going to play no-limit Holdém and only going to read one book this is the one. Its not a very advanced book but it covers all aspects of the smaller no-limit games and its relatively easy to understand. If you study this book and follow the advice you will definitely make money at the poker tables.
 

Small Stakes Holdém, Ed Miller David Sklansky Mason Malmuth

Its a very good book about fixed limit Holdém. This book explains everything you need to be a big winner. Unlike many other books about small stakes games, it teaches the aggressive and attacking style used by all professional players. However, it does not simply tell you to play aggressively; it shows you exactly how to make expert decisions through numerous clear and detailed examples. It teaches you to think like a professional player.

Holdém Poker For advanced players, David Sklansky & Mason Malmuth

Its an advanced book that every serious fixed limit players have to read. This book is solely dedicated to Limit Holdém. It is for "Advanced" players, but I don't believe the ideas presented to be too advanced for more novice players, plus you will be able to reread the book and grow into the more advanced concepts. Lots of good examples related to putting your opponents on hands, odds, draws, etc. There is so much information that I would recommend this book even for the no limit player.
 

Harrington on Holdém vol 1 & 2, Dan Harrington & Bill Robertie

The best and most complete book(s) on tournament poker on the market. Vol 1 show you how to play in the beginning and middle stages of a no-limit hold ém tournament, and vol 2 deals with the endgame. Volume 2, The Endgame,  is also a very good guide to shorthanded No-limit, something it isn’t much good literature dealing with.
